Though the weather continues on a mild streak, it’s now skating season. Outdoor rinks are open and will be through March, in most cases. There are plenty of outdoor and indoor rinks to choose from around Chicagoland, and many are free. Here is a guide to 17 indoor and outdoor rinks where you can lace up those skates.
OUTDOOR
Bobby Hull Community Ice Rink

The regulation-sized outdoor rink named for Chicago Blackhawks great Bobby Hull is closed for the time being because of the warm weather. At the opening ceremony of the rink in 2011, Hull said, “This is a great rink for the kids. It will get them off the streets — not only building them physically. Playing hockey is mental and builds character.” Bobby Hull lived in neighboring Berwyn in the 1950s.

The skating ribbon at Maggie Daley Park is in its second season. The quarter-mile loop is as wide as a road in parts, with railings on both sides, and has small rolling hills. It can accommodate 700 skaters.

The Chicago Wolves Ice Rink at MB Financial Park

Located at MB Financial Park, the NHL-sized outdoor rink is in its fourth year. Parking, located between Bryn Mawr and Balmoral avenues, is free with validation from one of the nearby restaurants. The park also has a two-story tubing hill.

This is the first year for the 60-by 120-foot outdoor rink next to the Wicker Park fountain. The rink is not refrigerated, and the ice is not yet fully frozen. Temperatures need to be 30 degrees or less during the day and 20 degrees at night. The rink has 4-foot walls surrounding it, with two gates. Skaters can warm up or use restrooms in the field house. The rink is maintained by volunteers. More than $31,000 was raised through gofundme.com donations to open the park.
