Aurora police continue to investigate a possible drag racing incident that may have caused the death of a 49-year-old Aurora man and seriously injured his teenage daughter on Friday.
According to Aurora Police Department spokesman Dan Ferrelli, Charles Siebel Jr., 2400 block of Biltmore Circle, Aurora, was pronounced dead early Monday morning at Rush Copley Medical Center where he had been receiving treatment since the Friday night crash.
Ferrelli said the crash occurred around 10:15 p.m. near the intersection of Eola Road and Shenandoah Drive in the Will County section of Aurora. Siebel was driving his 2004 Toyota Highlander eastbound on Shenandoah and stopped at the stop sign at Eola Road.
Ferrelli said Siebel then attempted to turn northbound onto Eola when he was hit by a 2011 Dodge Charger that was southbound on Eola, apparently traveling at an extremely high rate of speed.
According to police, it appears that the driver of the Charger, a 16-year-old Aurora boy, was drag racing with a 20-year-old Plainfield man who was driving a 2007 Pontiac Grand Prix.
Ferrelli said the driver of the Grand Prix, who was just south of the other two vehicles at the time of the crash, hit the center median on Eola and ended up in the northbound lanes.
Both Siebel and his daughter had to be extricated from their vehicle by Aurora Fire Department personnel.
The teenage victim continues to undergo treatment for serious, but non-life threatening, injuries, Ferrelli said.
The Charger’s driver suffered minor injuries and the Grand Prix’s driver refused medical treatment.
An autopsy is pending on Siebel at the Kane County Coroner’s Office in Geneva.
Charges are pending against the 16- and 20-year-olds, both of whom were alone in their vehicles at the time of the crash, Ferrelli said.
Aurora Police Department traffic investigators are heading the investigation and working with the Will County State’s Attorney on the incident. The area of Eola Road between Shiloh and Shenandoah drives was closed until approximately 5:30 a.m. Saturday for the investigation.
