A man arrested by U.S. marshals in Waukegan has been moved from Lake County to Minnesota to face charges that he killed his wife.

Todd Larry Tennin, of Maplewood, Minn., charged in the shooting death of his wife, was taken to Minnesota on Sunday after waiving his right to an extradition hearing, according to Lake County Undersheriff Ray Rose.

He had initially fought extradition and was being held without bail in Lake County Jail.

The U.S. Marshals Service Great Lakes Fugitive Force arrested Tennin, 31, without incident Sept. 3 after locating him at a home in Waukegan.

Maplewood police Chief Paul Schnell said Thursday afternoon that Tennin remains charged with second-degree homicide but that a grand jury could upgrade that charge to first-degree murder.

He is charged in connection with the shooting death of 41-year-old April Marie Tennin in the early morning hours of Aug. 23 in her Maplewood home.

Schnell previously said that according to the investigation, an argument between Tennin and his wife broke out with the woman’s children home at the time, a gunshot was heard and then Tennin left the home.

According to the charging documents, police received a call at 6:06 a.m. Aug. 23 from a 16-year-old girl in the home.

“My mom’s dead in the bathroom!” the girl said, according to court documents. A 12-year-old sibling was also present with her at the time, the documents state.

The Tennins were married at Stillwater Prison, a Minnesota state correctional facility, on Jan. 2, 2014, according to the documents.

Schnell said Tennin’s criminal history includes weapons charges.

In September, Maplewood police investigators received information that Tennin was hiding in Waukegan, Schnell said. Investigators worked with members of the Minnesota-based U.S. Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force to further pinpoint Tennin’s location. The task force contacted its counterparts in Illinois, who conducted surveillance on the home until Tennin was taken into custody Sept. 3.

Maplewood is a suburb of about 36,280 in the Twin Cities metropolitan area located about 9 miles from downtown St. Paul.
