A Long Grove man has accepted a plea bargain in connection with a 2013 crash that killed a Buffalo Grove woman, officials said this week.

Stephen Tomczyk, 24, of the 3200 block of Middlesax Drive in Long Grove, pleaded guilty in Lake County court last month to reckless homicide, according to Cynthia Vargas, spokeswoman for the Lake County state’s attorney’s office. He was sentenced to 4 1/2 years in prison, but according to Vargas, the two years he has already served in jail will be applied to that punishment.

Tomczyk was driving a Ford F-150 pickup truck Sept. 5, 2013, when police reports indicate that it crashed into a Honda CRV, driven by 47-year-old Jeewon Kim of Buffalo Grove. The mother died at the scene of the crash, which occurred near the intersection of Westmoreland Drive and Illinois Route 83 in Lake Zurich.

Kim’s then-16-year-old daughter was also in the vehicle and survived.

In court, Tomczyk originally faced charges that also included aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol resulting in death and aggravated DUI resulting in great bodily harm, according to Vargas.
