Police said an online threat made against Somonauk High School Monday evening is under control, and there is no immediate danger to the school or the community.

According to Somonauk police, officers were made aware of the threat around 4:38 p.m. Monday after someone reported seeing a suspicious post on the social media application Yik Yak.

Somonauk police, with the assistance of the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office, were able to identify a juvenile suspect who was taken into custody a few hours later, police said.

Police said the suspect has since been released to parents and will be referred to the State’s Attorney’s Office for prosecution.

“Police are confident that the situation is under control and that there is no known immediate threat to the community or school at this time,” the department said in a release.

Meanwhile, Somonauk School District Superintendent Jay Streicher sent a letter home to parents and guardians of students on Monday evening, informing them of the situation.

“Because we must take all threats seriously we will have additional security presence at the high school as police continue their investigation,” Streicher said. ” But, the police are convinced that the situation is under control.”

Streicher thanked the responding departments for their “quick, professional response” to the situation.
