Penn State coach James Franklin made the first move to remaking his offense, firing offensive coordinator John Donovan.
Franklin announced the decision Sunday following Penn State’s 55-16 loss at Michigan State. The move is effective immediately. Franklin did not say who would serve as acting offensive coordinator for Penn State’s bowl game.
“I have tremendous respect for John and the work he has put in over the last five years,” Franklin said in a statement. “I wish him and his family nothing but the best in the future.”
Donovan has been Franklin’s offensive coordinator for Franklin’s five seasons as head coach. He also coached at Maryland and Georgia Tech.
Penn State’s offense ranked near the bottom of the NCAA this season in total offense (108), rushing offense (106) and scoring (101). The Lions did not score more than 21 points in losses to Ohio State, Northwestern, Michigan and Michigan State this season.
Penn State will conduct a national search for a new coordinator, according to a release.
