As the holiday season begins, police in River Grove will be out putting in extra work to make sure people are being safe behind the wheel.

The department recently received cash from the Illinois Department of Transportation to conduct a traffic safety campaign. The campaign is currently under way and will continue until Dec. 29.

During this time, the funds have been used to conduct two nighttime safety checkpoints and one daytime safety checkpoint, as well as and nighttime saturation patrols. During these checkpoints and patrols, police say they’ll be looking for drivers:

* who aren’t using seatbelts

* using cellphones

* under the influence of alcohol or drugs

* aren’t using child safety seats properly

* driving while using a cell phone

* speeding

* generally operating cars in an unsafe manner.

River Grove Police Officer Tony Ikis has been organizing the extra patrols and safety checkpoints.

“We’re just trying to make sure everyone has a safe and enjoyable holiday,” he said.
