New Trier’s game plan was clear from the start.

The Trevians girls basketball team was going to get the ball to Jeannie Boehm in the paint as often as possible on Friday, Nov. 20.

Boehm, a 6-foot-3 forward and Harvard recruit, scored the team’s first basket and finished with 22 points, eight rebounds and five blocks in a 54-33 win over Loyola at New Trier’s Thanksgiving tournament in Wilmette.

“It’s not rocket science,” New Trier coach Teri Rodgers said. “Jeannie can do so many things. She passes the ball well, draws double teams. We will take advantage of what the defense gives us, and I trust her with the ball down there. She makes good decisions.”

Loyola coach Jeremy Schoenecker said he was happy with how his defense played against Boehm, one of the top post players in the state.

“Jeannie does a great job, but we made her work for everything,” he said.

Loyola’s struggles were on offense. The Ramblers (1-1) scored four points in the first quarter and trailed 22-9 at the half. Loyola finished with 19 turnovers.

“They jumped on us early, and we missed some open shots,” Schoenecker said. “[We lost] our confidence on the offensive end, and we were not ourselves anymore.”

Boehm’s basket with 2 minutes, 49 seconds left in the third quarter gave New Trier (2-0) a 35-15 lead, and that was all the points the Trevians needed to win.

But New Trier wasn’t as sharp offensively as Rodgers would have liked. The Trevians committed 20 turnovers.

“It definitely was an early-season game,” she said. “It’s not the best game we are going to play, but that’s a good thing. There is so much room for us to grow, and that’s exciting.”

Senior forward Liz Satter, who went to New Trier as a freshman, led Loyola with 11 points and seven rebounds. Senior forward Kathryn Pedi had 10 points and eight rebounds for New Trier.
