The seat of the presidency at Triton College is a step closer to being filled, with the number of potential candidates narrowed down to four.

The candidates met with administrators, faculty, staff and students in a “meet and greet” format Nov. 16 on campus, followed by official interviews with the Triton College Board. The candidates being considered for the position are Jeremy D. Brown, Anthony Cruz, Michael Gavin and current interim president Mary-Rita Moore.

Moore was appointed to the interim position in January 2015. Prior to that, she served in leadership roles for 31 years at the school, most recently as vice president for Strategic Planning at the college.

She’s also responsible for accreditation, the Center for Teaching Excellence, Institutional Planning and Institutional Effectiveness, Student Success, Sustainability and Technology and Innovation. She has master’s degree in business administration from Rosary College and is a native of Norridge.

Brown is a native Manchester, England and earned both his bachelor’s degree and doctorate degree in physics from University of Birmingham in England. He has taught physics at Princeton University, where he also became an associate dean. He also served as an associate dean at Yale University. In 2000, he became the chief executive officer at Florida State University-Republic of Panama.

He was also provost of State University of New York in Canton, New York and later held the roles of president at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania; Dowling College in Long Island, New York; and Portland Community College in Portland, Oregon.

He enjoys skiing, sailing and spending time with his family, especially when it involves watching his favorite soccer team, Manchester United.

Cruz is currently the vice president of Enrollment Management and Student Affairs at Sinclair Community College in Dayton, Ohio.

Before his current position, he worked as an administrator at several other colleges, including Cincinnati State Technical College, Cincinnati, Ohio; Broward College, a community college in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; Kaplan University, an online university, and Florida International University, located in Miami, Fla.

He received his bachelor’s degree in political science from Florida International University and his master’s degree in public administration from Florida State University. He received his doctorate in education from Florida International University.

Gavin earned his bachelor’s degree in English from Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pa. and his master’s degree in Literature from American University in Washington D.C. He later worked as a professor of English at Prince George’s Community College in Largo, Maryland.

After 10 years as a faculty member at Prince George’s Community College, he became a senior administrator at there. He is currently the associate vice president of Learning and Academic Affairs at Anne Arundel Community College in Arnold, Md..

No date has been set as to when an official decision will be made as to selection of a new college president.
