Weather more appropriate to November returns to the Chicago area after several days of near-record-setting, smile-inducing, no-jacket-wearing warmth, according to WGN meteorologist Tom Skilling’s forecast. Saturday is expected to have a high of 49, and Sunday will reach the low 50s, down from the balmy 70-plus degrees from earlier this week. The cool-down might not last, though. Temperatures are expected to return to the 60s midway through next week, according to the forecast.
October ended with above-normal temperatures and below-normal precipitation. This pattern is consistent with weather influenced by El Nino. The global weather phenomenon could mean a milder winter for Chicago.

Looking ahead
The latest NOAA temperature outlook for the Chicago area shows an increased chance of a warmer-than-normal winter as well as an increased chance of less-than-normal precipitation. NOAA attributes this outlook on El Nino, a warming of the surface of the Pacific Ocean. Although this warming of ocean water will occur thousands of miles away, a shift in ocean temperatures changes weather patterns around the globe. In a typical El Nino event, Northern states often get warmer while Southern states often get wetter.
