Division Commander James F. Volpe, a 32-year veteran with the Wheaton Police Department, will take over as the force’s new leader when Chief Mark Field retires at the end of this week.

Volpe, who has been with the Wheaton Police Department since 1983, was appointed by City Manager Don Rose. He will be sworn in as police chief at 3 p.m. Monday in the City Council chambers of Wheaton City Hall, officials said in a news release.

Field is retiring Saturday after serving as police chief since 1996.

Volpe served as a patrol officer for 10 years before becoming a shift commander/sergeant in 1993. In 2001, he was promoted to commander/lieutenant, and was then named division commander of investigations in 2009, officials said. Volpe also has served as the commander for the Special Weapons and Tactics Team.

He received a bachelor of science degree in education from Illinois State University in 1980 and a juris doctorate degree from DePaul University Law School in 1992, officials said.

Volpe has worked as an instructor for the Suburban Law Enforcement Academy as well as the Northwest Multi-Regional Training in the use of force and physical fitness and wellness, officials said.

He will be paid $144,000 a year.
