In 2007, the Vikings drafted running back Adrian Peterson out of Oklahoma with the seventh pick in the NFL draft. A year later, the Bears selected running back Matt Forte out of Tulane with the 44th pick. Both remain roster mainstays and the central part of their respective offenses.

Because Peterson sat out all but one game in 2014 amid controversy surrounding child abuse charges, they have played in nearly the same number of games — Forte 113, Peterson 110. But Peterson has scored more than twice as many touchdowns and has a decided advantage in rushing yards. Factoring in receiving yards, however, and Forte nearly matches Peterson in total yards from scrimmage.

Here is a comparison of their careers entering Sunday’s game between the Vikings (4-2) and Bears (2-4) at Soldier Field. 2015 statistics are through Week 7.

Advanced metrics

These statistics are created and collected by Football Outsiders, and they compare players’ efficiency with a hypothetical “league average” or “replacement-level” player at the same position. Negative ratings represent below-average offense. You can read more about these statistics here.

For the first half of his career, Forte’s performance paled in comparison with Peterson’s monster numbers. But over the last three seasons, Forte has made up some ground.

DYAR
Defense-adjusted Yards Above Replacement

This statistic gives the value of a player’s performance on plays in which a running back carried or caught the ball compared with a replacement-level player, adjusted for situation and opponent and translated into yards.

Year Forte Peterson
2007 229
2008 -16 83
2009 -98 150
2010 88 217
2011 24 153
2012 109 458
2013 193 60
2014 113 5
2015 63 -68

DVOA
Defense-adjusted Value Over Average

This statistic represents the value per play of a running back over an average running back in the same game situations. The more positive the rating, the better the player’s performance.

Year Forte Peterson
2007 16.8%
2008 -9.8% -2.9%
2009 -17.0% 1.8%
2010 0% 10.7%
