player ready...Welcome to RedEye’s “Song of the Day,” an ongoing feature where music reporter Josh Terry or another RedEye staff member highlights something they’re listening to. Some days the track will be new, and some days it will be old. No matter what, each offering is something you should check out. Check back every weekday for a new song and subscribe to the Spotify playlist below. And during Halloween week, we’re focusing solely on songs that are scary.
When I pitched RedEye on doing a scary song theme week for Song of the Day in honor of Halloween, one of our staff writers joked, “What, are you going to write about ‘Monster Mash’ or something?” Yes. Yes I am.
Before I chose “Monster Mash,” I was planning on writing a 700-word screed on Suicide’s “Frankie Teardrop,” an actually terrifying song, but literally no one would have wanted to read that. It’s Friday—a post telling you to listen to a dark, 10-minute, electro-punk, screech-heavy song about insanity, murder and suicide isn’t going to be the highlight of anyone’s day.
”Monster Mash,” on the other hand, brings people together. Consider my friend Pat: Every single house party he attends, he sneakily adds the song to the party playlist (along with Vanessa Carlton’s “A Thousand Miles”). It doesn’t matter the time of year; if you see Pat at a party, you’ll be hearing “Monster Mash” (just ask RedEye reporter Heather Schroering, who found this out at her housewarming party). Released in 1962 by Bobby “Boris” Pickett and the Crypt-Kickers, the song may not be scary, but it’s totally timely. Happy Halloween!
