Brienne Minor and Maddie Lipp have been on the same big stage before.
Just not at the same time.

In October of 2012, then-Lake Forest senior Lipp was starring in doubles with Christina Zordani at the state tournament, as the duo knocked off seven teams to win the championship.
At the same time, then-Carmel sophomore Brienne Minor was on the big stage in singles, winning four matches at state before losing in three sets to the eventual champ..
The next year, Lipp was headed to Northwestern University, and Minor still was a year away from dominating the state and winning the 2014 state singles title.
Which brings us to October of 2015.
Last weekend, Minor, a freshman at the University of Michigan, won the singles title in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association-sanctioned Midwest Regional Championship.
In the finals, Minor won 3-6, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (3) over Lipp.
The tourney was for college players, but was an individual event and not a team competition.
Minor was down 5-1 in the third set, rallied to serve for the match at 6-5, and then recovered in the tiebreaker after Lipp saved a match point.
With the win, Minor received the Midwest Region’s automatic bid to the National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships on Nov. 12-15.
Northwestern’s next event is a tournament this weekend in Alabama.
As for Zordani, she’s a high school senior and tearing it up on the club circuit.
She’s verbally committed to play at Wisconsin means she, Minor and Zordani all will be playing in the Big Ten.
Army football: Libertyville grad A.J. Schurr had a huge game at quarterback for Army in a 38-31 loss to Rice.
Schurr finished with a rushing touchdown and a passing touchdown, and ran for 117 yards on a team-high 23 carries. Schurr has rushed for 384 yards and seven touchdowns this season.
Villanova basketball: Stevenson grad Jalen Brunson of Villanova has been named Big East Conference Freshman of the Year.
Brunson also was given honorable mention on the All-Big East Preseason Team.
Iowa women’s golf: Zion-Benton grad and University of Iowa sophomore Morgan Kukla has played in one of four tourneys this fall for the Hawkeyes.
Kukla shot 78-88-82—248 in a tourney the Hawkeyes hosted in September.
Bradley women’s tennis: Mundelein grad and Bradley junior Ariel Dechter was just named a Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week.
Dechter is an accounting major with a 3.89 grade-point average, With a 54-32 career singles record, she is tied for second with Cindy Schneider (1984-88) on Bradley’s career singles wins list.
DePaul men’s basketball: On the Blue Demons’ coaching staff, listed as the director of community, corporate and professional relations, is Kevin Edwards, who was a standout guard for DePaul back when the program was relevant in the Chicago area.
Edwards’ son, Lorenzo Edwards, is the 6-foot-7 senior center for Lake Forest High School.
On the DePaul roster again this season is senior guard Aaron Simpson from North Chicago.

Indiana women’s volleyball: Wauconda grad Megan Tallman is the main setter for the Hoosiers (13-9 overall, 3-7 Big Ten).
The 5-10 junior has been a mainstay in the lineup all three years at IU.
Michigan field hockey: Lake Forest grad Morgan Dever is playing field hockey at the University of Michigan.
The redshirt sophomore plays in the midfield. She has one goal this year for the Wolverines (14-3), who are ranked 11th in the nation.
