Thursday is expected to be the coldest day here in nearly five months, with “perhaps a snow flurry toward morning,” but then temperatures are expected to climb to near record levels by early next week, according to WGN-TV meteorologist Tom Skilling.

Winds were expected to gust at 40 mph as the cold front hit northern Illinois, Wisconsin and northwest Indiana on Wednesday. The forecast is for temperatures in the mid-30s overnight, reaching only around 50 during the day Thursday.

“A few brief showers, possibly a snow flurry” are expected by daybreak, Skilling said, though nothing that will accumulate.

The earliest a trace of snow has been recorded in Chicago is Oct. 4, 2014, the latest on Nov. 30, 2010.

For Halloween, the forecast is for rain and temperatures in the 50s.

Then warm air will move in from the southwest, and we could see 70 by Tuesday, about 15 degrees above normal. The record high for that date is 75, set in 1987. The record low is 11 set in 1951.
