The cause of a fire that took place in Elmwood Park over the weekend remains undetermined as local firefighters continue their investigation.

The fire was reported at around 11:30 a.m. Oct. 25 at home in the 2800 block of 77th Ave.

Elmwood Park Fire Captain Allan Budnik said the fire started in the kitchen of the home. Firefighters said they forced their way into the home because no one was home at the time.

“It was in the area of the north wall, in the kitchen countertop area,” Budnik said.

He said the fire was confined to the kitchen, but the home sustained considerable smoke damage. As a result of the heat from the fire, siding melted on a neighboring house to the north, according to Budnik.

The fire was fully extinguished around 2 p.m. and only one hose was needed to fight the fire, officials said. No firefighters were injured.

Elmwood Park Fire Chief Kevin Miller said estimated damage because of the fire could be around $75,000.

“The guys did a great job putting the fire out,” Miller said.

Fire departments from Norwood Park and River Grove assisted in fighting the fire, officials said.
