Chance the Rapper is back. After sharing the spotlight with his Social Experiment bandmate Donnie Trumpet for the year’s best album, “Surf,” the recent dad and 22-year-old rapper looks finally ready to start the rollout for his much-anticipated follow-up to 2013’s “Acid Rap.” And boy, did he kick things off in style.
Appearing on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” Chance kept it in his Chicago family, performing his new song, “Angels,” with the Social Experiment, local rapper Saba, bop king Dlow and DJ Oreo. It was a raucous performance, featuring an almost-island beat and Trumpet’s showstopping horns. Plus, Colbert had an integral role, nailing his part sitting perfectly still at his desk as a haloed “angel.” This just proves how far Chance has come, from reciting poetry at YOUmedia at the Harold Washington Library to absolutely slaying the late-night TV stage. He’s unstoppable right now. Watch video of the whole thing below.
In addition to the performance, Colbert also interviewed the rapper. Chance detailed his history—how his debut “10 Day” came to be—as well as his decision to forgo signing with a major label. The biggest reveal, however, was when Colbert confirmed that he and Chance are working on a song together as well as releasing a documentary about it. Details are still murky (the interview was before the performance, so it’s possible they were just referring to Colbert’s angelic cameo during the song), but hey, 2015 is wild, so we’re not totally surprised.
By the way, you can also download “Angels” for free right here. Listen to it below—it’s flames.
In other Chance news, he hung out with Jay Z, Beyonce and Usher this weekend. What a time to be alive.
