The Elmwood Park Fire Department has strengthened its ranks with a new hire.

At the Oct. 19 Elmwood Park Village Board meeting Jeff Johnca was sworn in as a new firefighter. He stood straight, tall and proud as he was sworn in by Elmwood Park Village President Angelo “Skip” Saviano at the meeting.

Elmwood Park Fire Chief Kevin Miller said the department is happy to have him.

“He’s a great new kid,” he said. “He graduated from the academy with honors.”

Miller said he will be on probation until July, and although he’s out of the academy, there’s more for him to learn.

“We’re continuing with his education here,” he said.

At the meeting, the fire department officials also presented a $1,000 check to representative of the Illinois Fire Safety Alliance. The money will go towards programs the organization sponsors like Camp “I Am Me,” which provides a week-long camping experience for children and teenagers who have burn injuries.

A portion of the money donated was raised by the sale of the fire department’s chili at the village’s Fall Fest.
