Some showers Saturday morning will lead into a clear Sunday, according to WGN meteorologist Tom Skilling’s weekend forecast. Temperatures will continue to be mild: Lows will stay north of 40 degrees and highs will be above average. Lower temperatures Sunday will be in line with normal levels after several days of above-average temperatures.

Sunday’s clear weather could be perfect for a pumpkin patch visit. Many of the patches will close after Halloween next weekend.

Looking downstate, some parts of central Illinois are experiencing drought conditions, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor. The weekly report shows that an area stretching from Coles County in eastern Illinois to Rock Island and Hancock counties in western Illinois are experiencing moderate drought conditions.

Outside of Chicagoland, Hurricane Patricia has grown to a Category 5 storm, the strongest ever recorded in the Western Hemisphere. It is headed toward southwestern Mexico and could make a “potentially catestrophic landfall” Friday.

Looking ahead

The latest NOAA temperature outlook for the Chicago area shows an increased chance of a warmer-than-normal winter as well as an increased chance of less-than-normal precipitation. NOAA attributes this outlook to El Nino, a warming of the surface of the Pacific Ocean. Although this warming of ocean water will occur thousands of miles away, a shift in ocean temperatures changes weather patterns around the globe. In a typical El Nino event, Northern states often get warmer while Southern states often get wetter.
