With a restaurant name like Guru, it’s no surprise that head chef and new owner Emeliano Rebello is a bit of a guru himself.
A native of Goa, India, having prepared authentic Indian dishes at the local restaurant since 2008, Rebello knows a thing or two about curry, tandoori and biryani.
Rebello and his wife, Catherine, purchased the restaurant on Sept. 12, and Catherine said they aim to bring their delicious dining experience to more customers.
“We want to make our menu more selective, and we offer delivery to a larger area. Even if you are in Valparaiso, we will deliver to you. We want to give more people the opportunity to enjoy our food,” she said.
Tuesday through Sunday, Guru offers a generous lunchtime buffet from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. with a rotating selection of dishes such as butter chicken, vegetable korma, saag paneer and chicken vindaloo.
There is always a fresh soup on the buffet, like tomato, dal or mulligatawny soup, a salad bar with raita and yogurt, and dessert such as rice pudding or mango custard.
Dinner is offered from 4:30 to 9:30 p.m. in a beautifully decorated table-clothed dining room.
Specialties on the dinner menu include the goan fish curry, a Mahi Mahi fish cooked with onions, tomatoes, and coconut milk; murgh malai reshmi kabob, which is chicken marinated in yogurt and exotic Indiana spices and herbs and roasted in a clay oven; and lamb vindaloo, lamb and diced potatoes cooked in a red, homemade dry chili vindaloo sauce.
