A Lake County Sheriff’s deputy will need surgery to repair several fractures in his hand after responding to an alleged domestic violence incident Tuesday night near Round Lake, according to authorities.
The deputy was injured at about 10:30 p.m. while trying to enter a home on the 24600 block of West Passavant Avenue in unincorporated Lake County, where he was among officers responding to a call regarding a fight in progress, police said.
When the officers arrived, they determined the aggressor in the incident was David Martinez-Sanchez, a 44-year-old who lives at that address, according to Sheriff’s Det. Christopher Covelli.
Covelli said Martinez-Sanchez had already physically attacked a woman and a man, both of whom were in the home when deputies arrived at the scene.
Officers also determined that Martinez-Sanchez was holding the woman against her will, Covelli said. Officers then attempted to enter the home, but Martinez-Sanchez resisted by pushing back on the door, Covelli said.
Martinez-Sanchez closed the door on a deputy’s hand, Covelli said, resulting in several fractures.
Deputies then attempted to get inside through a back door, but Martinez-Sanchez had barricaded it with furniture, Covelli said. Deputies ultimately entered through a window and took Martinez-Sanchez into custody, he said.
The injured deputy was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville. Covelli said the deputy will require surgery to repair the fractures.
Martinez-Sanchez has been charged with aggravated battery to a peace officer, unlawful restraint, two counts of domestic battery, resisting arrest resulting in injury, obstructing a peace officer, and resisting arrest, according to the sheriff’s office.
He was being held in Lake County Jail on Wednesday morning after bail was set at $100,000 during a bond hearing, Covelli said. A Nov. 10 court date was also scheduled for Martinez-Sanchez during the Wednesday hearing.
