A number of the Valparaiso University Music Department bands will perform during the Family Weekend on Saturday in a tradition of bringing music to the masses.
The free concerts take place at the Chapel of the Resurrection and Conductor Jeffrey Scott Doebler says Family Weekend concerts are a way to showcase their music for the community.
“The bands have been playing for these concerts for about 25 years now. We try to provide a variety of music because the families come from all over,” Doebler says.
The weekend kicks off Saturday with a performance from The Valparaiso University Chamber Concert Band at 4 p.m., followed by the Luce and Community/University Concert Bands at 7:30 p.m.
The Chamber Concert Band will perform works by Richard Denham, Gregory Pascuzzi, Allen Brings, and Benjamin Williams, concluding with “Rahab,” by Jesse Ayers with Maura Janton Cock, soprano.
“All of these pieces we have worked on with the actual composers and we feel the audience will find it a very interesting performance,” Doebler says.
The Luce and Community/University Concerts Bands will perform works by Yu Jianfang, Leo Delibes, William E. Rhoads, Ericka Svanoe’s “The Haunted Carousel,” featuring the theremin, and a band arrangement of “Uptown Funk!”
