Welcome to RedEye’s “Song of the Day,” an ongoing feature where music reporter Josh Terry or another RedEye staff member highlights something they’re listening to. Some days the track will be new, and some days it will be old. No matter what, each offering is something you should check out. Check back every weekday for a new song and subscribe to the Spotify playlist below.
Isn’t this great? Chance The Rapper, who’s just embarked on his “Family Matters Tour” with Towkio, D.R.A.M. and Metro Boomin,’ has shared a lovely studio cover of Kanye West’s “Family Business” off Ye’s 2004 “The College Dropout.”
Chance debuted a live version of the song last month at Arizona’s Summer Ends Music Festival, but the recorded cover allows each nuance of the rendition to shine through. While it’s jazzy and grandiose, complete with Chance’s vulnerable croons and some powerful background vocals, what truly makes this version special is knowing that without Kanye, Chicago rap and Chance’s Savemoney crew would not be what it is today. Listen and watch its sentimental accompanying video, edited by Jake Linden and Austin Vesely, called “Family Matters” below.
