Deputies initially believed the people seen might have fled an early-morning traffic crash in Kaneville Township that involved a stolen vehicle. The vehicle found at the crash site was taken during a hijacking in Chicago, Lt. Patrick Gengler said.
Gengler said that, after reviewing surveillance footage from a local business near the park, it was determined that the people seen at the park were two women and not the men who fled from the crash scene.
Deputies are still actively searching for the men, and no other suspicious reports have been received.
According to the Illinois State Police, the men fled a 12:50 a.m. crash on the eastbound lanes of Interstate 88 near Dauberman Road. Troopers said a car the men were in and a semitractor-trailer crashed, injuring the car’s driver.
The male driver was taken to Presence Mercy Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries, said Illinois State Police Maser Sgt. Jason Bradley. The man was treated and taken into custody, authorities said.
Two other men who were inside the car managed to run away.
Gengler said Kane County deputies were contacted by Illinois State Police about the crash about 1 a.m. and were told to keep watch for the missing suspects. Several hours later, Kane deputies received the 911 call about two suspicious men seen near a park in Kaneville Township. Responding deputies checked the area but came up empty-handed, Gengler said.
Later Tuesday morning, police learned the two “men” spotted at the park were actually women and not involved with the crash/hijacking incident.
