Will Gunst went winless during the boys golf regular season.

That all changed once the state series started last week. After Monday, Oct. 12, the York senior now owns two victories.

His latest medalist performance came at the Class 3A Conant Sectional when he shot a 1-under 69 at Bridges of Poplar Creek Country Club in Hoffman Estates. Gunst also won the Class 3A Lake Park Regional at Indian Lakes Resort on Tuesday, Oct. 6, with a 1-under 71.

“Things have been shaping up for me mentally,” Gunst said. “I’m playing at a good pace.”

For the second week in a row, the Dukes were team champions after posting a 301 on a windy and unseasonably warm day at Bridges of Poplar Creek Country Club. The sectional title is a first for the program, according to the IHSA website. St. Viator took second at 305, and New Trier was the third and final team qualifier for the state tournament with its 311.

Gunst started his sectional round with a bogey, but he went on to make three birdies and an eagle.

“I stayed patient, and I was happy to help my team win,” he said.
