Taking command in the 23rd mile, Dickson Chumba went on to a 25-second win in 2 hours, 9 minutes, 25 seconds in Sunday’s Chicago Marathon. Sammy Kitwara finished second, and a third Kenyan, Sammy Ndungu, was third. It was the second straight Kenyan podium sweep and third in the last five years.

U.S. runner Luke Puskedra, who was ready to give up running a year ago, was fifth in a time, 2:10:24, that lowered his personal best by some five minutes. It was the best Chicago finish for a U.S. man since Ryan Hall’s fifth in 2011. Another U.S. runner, marathon debutant Elkanah Kibet, was seventh in 2:11:31.

On the women’s side, Florence Kiplagat ruled the course with a victory in 2 hours 23 minutes 33 seconds. She pumped her arms as she ran through the finish line then dropped to the ground. She rested only a moment before rolling onto her stomach and giving a thumbs up to the crowd, then hopping to her feet and jumping three times while beaming.

American Deena Kastor, who won the Chicago Marathon 10 years ago, earned a women’s master’s record in 2:27:47.

Tatyana McFadden won her sixth Chicago Marathon wheelchair race. Stay with us for race updates, road closures (and re-openings), photos, video and more.
