The Chicago Bears have squared off against their rivals the Green Bay Packers 191 times since 1921. The Chicago Bulls have faced teams featuring Lebron James 68 times since 2003. The Chicago White Sox have played the Detroit Tigers 2,113 times since 1901. None of those rivalries compares with the Cubs and Cardinals, though, as the two teams have met 2,363 times 123 years. This time it’s different, as the teams meet each other in the playoffs for the first time ever. Below, a look at the history of the rivalry and the postseason successes and failures of each of the teams:

Head-to-head
history
The Cubs and Cardinals have been playing against each other since 1892, and this familiarity has bred one of the best rivalries in baseball. Early in the rivalry the Cubs held the upper hand, but more recently the power has swung in the Cardinals direction.
2,363 games
Total games since the Cubs were the “Colts” and the Cardinals were the “Browns.”

Ties
The Cubs lead the all-time series by 50 games, a margin largely gained in the early 1900s. The tide began to turn in the 1940s when the Cubs posted the team’s first losing decade a trend that held through the 1980s. Since 1990, despite the Cardinals postseason success the overall record has been near even at 234-240.

Postseason history
It may seem odd that the Cubs and Cardinals had never faced off in the postseason before, but there are logical reasons why. Before 1969 there were no other postseason series besides the World Series, which pitted the winner of the National and American Leagues against each other, and the Cubs and Cardinals have both always played in the NL. Even after expanding the postseason with the division series in 1995, for the teams to play each other in a Series would’ve required one of them to win the Wild Card. This year marks the first time the Cubs and Cardinals both made the playoffs in the same season.
