Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Welcome to RedEye’s “Song of the Day,” an ongoing feature where music reporter Josh Terry or another RedEye staff member highlights something they’re listening to. Some days the track will be new, and some days it will be old. No matter what, each offering is something you should check out. Check back every weekday for a new song and subscribe to the Spotify playlist below.

Tonight Chicagoans will be glued to their TV screens and Malört bottles for a nail-biting, high-stakes and potentially-season-ending Wild Card game between the Cubs and the Pittsburgh Pirates. Though I can’t say if North Las Vegas future pop singer Shamir is super into sports, he makes incredible pump-up music, and his song “On the Regular” will help quell your pre-game nerves.

As I mentioned in my review of the 20-year-old’s excellent debut album “Ratchet,” the single works as an origin story for the eccentric artist. He sings in a high pitched countertenor, “Ever since I was 8, I was attached to the mic/Wanted a guitar before I wanted a bike” over high-powered blasts of club synths and programmed drum machine taps. But that’s not what works best as pump-up music; it’s the zipping, ebullient chorus. In those blissful few seconds, there’s enough fun, dance party energy to just absolutely let loose.

No matter the outcome of the game or even if you like sports or not, you should check out Shamir headlining Lincoln Hall tomorrow. Tickets, amazingly, are still available, and you can buy them here. Listen below.
