According to Aurora police reports, the incident began around 12:28 a.m. when officers responded to a report of an attempted robbery in the area of Lincoln and Evans avenues.
A 39-year-old man said he was walking in the area when a masked man holding something in his hand approached him from behind and demanded his valuables. Police said the 39-year-old told the suspect he didn’t have anything to give him, and then ran to a nearby bar to call police. He told officers the suspect was possibly with another man who was acting as a look-out. He said they ran eastbound from the scene.
Responding officers reported that they were aware of a house about a block east of the scene that was known for gang activity. They headed in that direction to search for suspects.
When they arrived in the 700 block of Concord Street, officers noticed a Honda Civic parked in the driveway of the home in question. They reported that Wilson Guillen, 21, 100 block of Fernwood Road, was seen getting out of the vehicle. When Guillen saw police, he looked shocked and got back inside his vehicle and closed the door, according to reports.
Officers reported smelling marijuana inside the vehicle and asked Guillen if there was anything illegal inside the Civic.
At that point, Guillen opened the driver’s side door, stuck his foot out and appeared as if he was getting ready to run, police wrote.
He refused to exit the vehicle and shifted around in the seat as if he was sitting on something, police said. When officers pulled Guillen out of the vehicle, they allegedly found a .45 caliber semi-automatic handgun lying on the driver’s seat where Guillen had been sitting. The gun did not have a cartridge in the chamber, but there were seven live cartridges in the magazine of the gun.
Guillen was placed in handcuffs and officers ordered the vehicle’s two passengers out of the car.
A female passenger, Veronica Espino, 24, 700 block of Concord Street, Aurora, was charged with possession of marijuana after police allegedly located a bag of marijuana in her possession.
A second passenger, Raul Romero, 20, 0-99 block of Fernwood Road, Montgomery, was charged with underage consumption.
During an interview with police, Guillen told officers they were lucky he wasn’t alone or he could have “done something bad” and shot the officers, according to police reports.
Guillen was charged with felony possession of a weapon by a street gang member, six counts of felony unlawful use of a weapon, as well as misdemeanor possession of marijuana, obstructing an officer and possession of drug paraphernalia. Police allegedly found a bag of marijuana and a grinder in Guillen’s vehicle, they said.
