Garden stones: Meadowview School students learned about plants in a very concrete way with the help of art teacher Kelly Griffin, ESL teacher Jessica Achtor and parent volunteers, Jessica Albert and Rebecca Gordon. Albert and Gordon wanted to offer students the opportunity to study nature and create a project in the school’s outdoor classroom. Principal Laura Morgan agreed that utilizing the space for a special after-school nature focused program would be ideal. The teachers and parents worked with 20 students in grades 2-3 to study leaves and create cement stepping stone imprints from the leaves. Students chose from sunflower or squash leaves provided, or chose to cut a hosta leaf from the outdoor classroom area. The students assisted in the mixing of the cement, which was a first for most students. After applying a thick coat of cement to the leaves, completely covering them, they then wrote their names and the date in the cement with a stick. The stepping stones were set aside to cure over the weekend and then students were able to take their creations home. Several extras were made to use as decorations in classrooms and in the outdoor classroom.
