Led by medalist Chip Savarie, the Loyola boys golf team captured the team title on Saturday, Oct. 3, at New Trier’s invitational.
On a cool and windy day, Savarie, a sophomore, shot a 2-over 73 as the Ramblers finished with a 307 at the Winnetka Golf Club, site of next week’s Class 3A New Trier Regional. Savarie shared low honors with New Trier senior Matt Murlick, but he finished first on a scorecard playoff.
“It was a solid round,” said Savarie, who carded two birdies against four bogeys. “It’s a tough course, and the conditions weren’t great.”
Murlick, the Central Suburban South champion, made three birdies and five bogeys.
“I hit the ball great, and I didn’t put myself in bad positions,” Murlick said. “My ball flight is good in this weather.”
The Trevians was second with a 311, and Lake Forest took third at 320. Loyola sophomore John Kryscio finished alone in third after his 75. Glenbrook South junior Charlie Nikitas and Glenbrook North junior Charlie Van Cleave each shot 76.
Loyola coach Tim Kane said he was happy with his team’s play, but the focus is on the regional tournament on Tuesday, Oct. 6.
“For us to shoot a score like we did on a day like [Saturday] is good to see,” he said. “We were very solid.”
