An East Chicago man was shot dead Tuesday afternoon while sitting in a car, East Chicago Police Chief Mark Becker said.
Becker said that some residents near 140th and Grace streets heard gunshots fired around 3 p.m. Tuesday. They soon found Shanton L. Carprue, 23, of the 4000 block of Catalpa Street, shot to death inside a car near the intersection, he said.
“The vehicle was shot multiple times,” Becker said.
The Lake County Coroner’s office was called to the scene of the shooting and ruled his death a homicide, according to a press release.
Becker said that police were trying to find security video footage from some nearby businesses but that they did not have a suspect. No one reported seeing the shooting, he said.

Becker said police aren’t sure of a motive and that they don’t believe he was involved in any local gangs.
“He wasn’t really known to us,” the chief said.
