Wilmette police said an Evanston man texted a cop to arrange what he said would be a crack cocaine sale – though he reportedly later told police he only had planned to rob his supposed customer. He now faces prescription drug charges, police said, related a search of his car by investigators.
A Wilmette police report said Demarcus Curtis, 24, of the 1500 bock of Dodge Avenue in Evanston, is scheduled to appear Oct. 1 in Cook County Court on a charge of possessing a controlled substance. The incident in question was alleged to have taken place Sept. 14, shortly before midnight, on the 1900 block of Schiller Avenue, police said in their report.
Police said a detective received a call from an informant who gave a phone number supposedly connected with an Evanston man who would deliver crack cocaine and marijuana.
The report said the officer sent a text message to the phone number purporting to want to make a drug purchase, and arranged, through subsequent text messages, for a cocaine purchase and for the location where he and the seller should meet.
At 11:40 p.m. that night, the police officer reportedly saw a car pull down an alley on Schiller, police said. He and other officers stopped the car, the report said, and Curtis and two other people were arrested.
Police reported that Curtis told officers that they would not find anything in a search of the car, because Curtis had intended to rob the man.
When police searched the car, they found a small number of Tylenol 3 pills with codeine, the report said. They charged Curtis and the two other men were released without charges, police said.
Curtis could not be reached for comment.
