Jarid Martinez of Skokie is part of the team at Forrest’s Duxler Complete Auto Care, a long time Wilmette business at 1201 Green Bay Road, but he took some time Sept. 22 to talk to Pioneer Press about long distance friendships, his favorite sport and the best way to eat chocolate fudge ice cream.
What’s your favorite leisure-time activity?
I’d say basketball. I play a little, a little guard. You can play basketball almost anywhere; all you need is a ball and a basket. I like football, but you need a lot more equipment to play that.
Did you ever have a pen-pal or any other long-distance relationship that you tried to keep in touch with?
I’m from Belize, so I’d say letters to my family in Belize, but that’s kind of boring. At one point, I had friends in Australia that I kept up with. They were in Melbourne. But I lost touch with them a while ago.
Do you have a charity or cause you’d like people to know about?
The March of Dimes. I used to work for them, and they work with kids exclusively. They used to fight polio, now they have other things that they do for kids.
What advice would you give a younger you?
I would say to a younger me, “Stay level-headed and don’t worry. Remember that there are better things to come.”
Cowboy, astronaut, firefighter – what was the first thing you remember wanting to be when you were little?
I think I wanted to be a sports star first of all, either football or baseball. And if it came down to it, I think I’d choose football. I played football in high school. I played a lot of positions – fullback, half back, other positions to. I definitely, without a doubt, like playing defense best.
What would be your dream vacation?
I want to go to Dubai. They have incredible cars there. Even their police squad cars are Lamborghinis! And they have the tallest tower in the world, the Burj Khalifa.
Finally, what is your favorite comfort food?
It’s got to be ice cream, chocolate and fudge ice cream, a mix of the two. I eat it straight from the tub. I absolutely love chocolate.
