A registered sex offender from Des Plaines with ties to St. Charles faces allegations he sexually assaulted and abused a girl over a nearly a dozen years.

Mark Scalia, 48, who is free on $200,000 bail, is charged with multiple counts of criminal sexual assault and abuse, some of which allege the use of force and that reference the female as a family member, according to the recently issued indictment. He was arrested in August and later released when his wife, who listed a St. Charles address, posted $20,000 bond, court documents show. Scalia appeared in court Thursday for a status hearing and is expected to be arraigned Oct. 29.

Scalia has been on the state’s sex offender registry since 2007. He last registered in St. Charles in 2014 before moving to Des Plaines, police said, following a DuPage County conviction for indecent solicitation of a minor. He pleaded guilty to twice trying to arrange a sex act with someone between the ages of 13 and 17 in the 2005 case based out of Wheaton. He was sentenced to 60 days in jail, 30 months of probation and to register as sex offender as part of his guilty plea, according to DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office spokesman Paul Darrah.

The St. Charles police investigation into the most recent incident led to Scalia being charged with an October 2014 sex assault. The recent indictment added 11 additional counts that stretch back to March 2003.
