Coming soon, to the sidelines of rival schools near you: Stevenson High School’s newest sets of bleachers.
Stevenson is buying two new bleacher stands, officials say, which will spend plenty of time behind the school football field’s south end zone, giving the marching band a place to sit.
When not in use on Friday nights, though, the new sets can be moved to just about anywhere on campus — or, rented to other campuses, according to Sean Carney, Stevenson’s director of business services.
“They’re highway-rated, so they can be driven on the highway,” said Carney.
The school already has a pair of bleachers in that end zone for its band, but they are leased. In order to save money in the long run, and possibly generate revenue, Carney received permission from the School Board during its Sept. 21 meeting to buy two new stands for $35,000 from Kay Park Recreation Corp.

The new set will seat 520 students, Carney said — and they will spend Friday nights mostly full, because Stevenson’s marching band currently involves 350 students.
“We’re right around the size of Ohio State,” superintendent Eric Twadell said.
Kay Park Recreation builds this set to be portable, Carney said, so they could pop up at Stevenson baseball fields, around special events where large crowds are expected, and maybe even inside the field house.
“We’ll use them in every way we can,” he said, which might include renting and moving them off-campus.
The new purchase, like Stevenson’s existing bleachers, will be inspected annual by an engineer, Carney said. They will be covered by the school’s umbrella insurance policy for accidents.
