I know there’s a little part of you that’s clinging to summer. And when your weather app is still predicting 80-degree days, why not? But there’s something you should know: Yesterday was the first official day of autumn. So why not order a pumpkin spice latte, wear boots to work and pour a little bourbon in everything you drink? You officially have an excuse. The epitome of all fall activities is also in reach, as long as you’re willing to work for it. Apple orchards have opened their doors (er, fields) to ambitious pickers, apple pie makers and fall fanatics.

Though these orchards are located outside city limits, they’re worth the trip. Make a day of picking apples, pumpkin patching and chowing down on fresh apple cider doughnuts. Getting excited about fall yet?

Woodstock Country Orchard

The self-proclaimed “old-fashioned orchard” offers all the basics with no extra fees for parking and picking. In October, expect braeburn, winesap and granny smith varieties.

Though the orchard has a lighter crop this year because of rain and cold temperatures, it’s one of the closest drives from Chicago. Pick red delicious and golden delicious in October, and don’t forget to hit the ATM as it’s a cash-only spot. Go to heinzorchard.com for more information.

Pick six apple varieties straight from the trees or shop the pre-picked selection in the barn. The bakery offers pies, breads and cookies, but the doughnuts are their specialty.
