Two members of the Special Recreation Services of Northern Lake County that is based in Waukegan did well at the Special Olympics Illinois state tennis tournament that was held recently at Lincoln-Way North High School in south suburban Frankfort.

The Waukegan participants were Emanuel Giles and Christian Torres.
In most years, Giles and Torres would have qualified for the state meet through a district competition. But that level of competition was canceled this year due to concerns over high temperatures, so competitors for state were chosen through a drawing.
At state, Giles earned a gold medal in his division of the individual skills competition.
Torres took fourth in singles in his level of play. This was his sixth year participating in Special Olympics tennis, and he also participates in Special Olympics volleyball, track and basketball.
The SRSNLC is an association of the Lindenhurst Park District, Round Lake Area Park District, Waukegan Park District and Zion Park District.
As an extension of the Waukegan Park District, the SRSNLC conducts a variety of year-round recreation programs for individuals age 3-over with disabilities, and also assists the Waukegan Park District with inclusion needs.
Program options include social outings, dances, indoor and outdoor fitness programs, arts and crafts programs, bowling leagues, summer, spring, and winter day camps, youth and teen specific programs, and sports teams that compete in the Special Olympics of Illinois.
Warren Jr. Lady Blue Devils: The start of the travel youth basketball season is right around the corner, and the Warren Jr. Lady Blue Devils program for girls in school grades 5-8 will start off with a clinic at Warren High School on Almond Road.
The program will start on Sept. 29 and be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
The clinic will be run by Warren varsity girls basketball coach John Stanczykiewicz.

U.S. Figure Skating Regional Championship: A major figure skating event is coming next month to the Rink Side ice rink in Gurnee Mills and the RecPlex in Pleasant Prairie.
This event is the first round of the national figure skating competition, and the top four competitors at each qualifying level will advance to sectionals. The top finishers at sectionals will advance to nationals.
There will be around 800 competitors in various age groups. Skating will go from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. daily from Oct. 8-13.
Admission to watch at Rink Side is free. That’s where the younger and newer skaters will compete.
Admission to the RecPlex will be $10 per day. These are the experienced, older skaters who are more likely to advance to the sectional.
Road run in Big Hollow: The fourth annual Big Hollow PTO 5K run/walk will be held at 9 a.m. this coming Saturday, Sept. 26, with the start/finish at Big Hollow Elementary School (Fish Lake and Molidor roads) in Ingleside.
The event is a fundraiser for the Big Hollow school district.
The PTO provides funds and grants for teachers and staff to enhance the learning experience for the district’s students.
Money raised at the race goes directly back to the school and it students.
There is race-day registration at 7:30 a.m., and the cost is $30 for the 5K and $10 for the one-mile fun run, There is a $5 fee for children who participate in a quarter-mile fun run.

Race times are 8:05 for the one-mile run, 8:30 for the quarter-mile run, and 9 a.m. for the 5K.
