The seventh annual Cemetery Walk is set for Oct. 7 in Montgomery.
Debbie Buchanan, staff liaison for the Historic Preservation Commission, said the event involves sharing the stories of those who lived in the area and made Montgomery what it is today.
This year’s event will be at Riverside Cemetery beginning at 7 p.m. Visitors will tour the cemetery, with visits at the graves of four people to be spotlighted this year.
Guests can congregate at the entrance to the facility at the corner of River and Taylor streets on the south side of the cemetery.
Buchanan would not give away the “entire stories” of those whose resting places will be visited. One is a former shoemaker who as an adult raised his family in what is now Settler’s Cottage. Another to be featured is a Danish woman who left Denmark at the age of 15 to begin her journey in America. The third is a woman who was left a widow at a very young age, never remarried and lived in the village and celebrated her 100th birthday here. The last visit will be the resting place of an Oswego businessman who was involved with the California gold rush in 1849.

There is no charge for the event. In the event of bad weather, the rain date for the walk is Oct. 8. For those who take part in the walk, Buchanan advises they wear sturdy walking shoes and bring flashlights.
Volunteers are still needed to serve as guides to escort groups through the cemetery. To volunteer or for additional information, call Buchanan at 630-896-8080, Ext. 1114.
