The Elmwood Park Police Department has a new recruit joining the ranks — one carrying a name already tied to local law enforcement.

Michael Loni, 24, is the son of Rodger Loni, head of the River Grove Police Department.

Michael graduated from the Cook County Training Academy on Sept. 11; on Sept. 21, he’ll start his 10-week probationary training in the Elmwood Park Police Department. During that period, he’ll work with a more experienced officer before moving out on his own.

His father’s reputation precedes him, with Rodger having more than 40 years of experience as a police officer. He’s currently the head of the River Grove Police Department.

Elmwood Park Police Chief Frank Fagiano said despite his father’s rank in the neighboring village’s department, Michael Loni will be evaluated like any other new hire. He said Michael had to take a test to be put on the department’s eligibility list, just like any other prospective police officer wanting to work for the Elmwood Park police.

“He took the test and was selected based on his qualifications,” Fagiano said. “He was seven or eight on the eligibility list. His dad has nothing to do with hiring and firing in Elmwood Park Police Department.”

Rodger said he wouldn’t have it any other way. He wants to let his son make his own way as a police officer.

“I want him to get his feet planted without interference,” Rodger said. “He’s a grown man and has to stand on his own two feet.”

He says the “Loni” name may draw some negative attention to his son, but says being a police officer is something his son wanted to do, so he supports his son’s decision from a distance.

“I want to stay out of the whole process so he learns what he needs to do on the job,” Rodger said. “I wish him the best and I hope he stays safe.”

Fagiano said Michael will be trained on everything he needs to know about being an Elmwood Park police officer.

“I’m very confident he will do a very good job,” Fagiano said.
