Welcome to RedEye’s “Song of the Day,” an ongoing feature where music reporter Josh Terry or another RedEye staff member highlights something they’re listening to. Some days the track will be new, and some days it will be old. No matter what, each offering is something you should check out. Check back every weekday for a new song and subscribe to the Spotify playlist below.
It’s 2015 and I’ve thought, by now, all the good band names must have been taken. That’s certainly not the case if New Zealand indie rock outfit Salad Boys has anything to say about it. The four-piece got its moniker after mishearing a lyric in The Feelies song “Fa Cé La” and ran with it, resulting in a totally absurd, funny and memorable title.
But enough about the band name, let’s talk about the music. Fortunately, it’s just as good. If you’re into jangly indie rock and power pop in the vein of R.E.M., The dBs or one of New Zealand’s many other indie pop acts, Salad Boys is going to hit a very sweet musical spot. There isn’t a better example of this ‘80s-channeling bliss than the band’s recent single “Dream Date,” which appears on its new album “Metalmania.” The track has a warm coat of lo-fi and fuzzy guitars that make its sunny melodies pop with ramshackle charm. Listen below.
If you dig this, you have a chance to see Salad Boys play a ripping set at one of Chicago’s most intimate venues, The Owl. Joining the New Zealanders are Chicago’s Clearance (also rad) and American Breakfast (another great band name). The best part? Tickets are FREE. Best live music deal in town.
