Health-related resources and ideas for improving one’s health will be on tap at an upcoming event in Elmwood Park.

The Get Fit 2015 Health and Fitness Fair will take place Sept. 26 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the village’s Parks and Recreation Center, 2 Conti Parkway. Alan Schmidt, director of Elmwood Park parks and recreation, said the event is his way of providing health resources and information to the community.

“I’m trying to get across to the community the importance of being an advocate for themselves,” he said.

Free EKGs (electrocardiograms) will be available for residents. There will be samples of various kinds of healthy food. Free flu shots will be given. Doctors specializing in dentistry, allergies, podiatry, ophthalmology and chiropractics will be on hand to answer questions at the event.

“We’ll be providing a number of free drugs, like free diabetes medicine, free prenatal vitamins and free antibiotics,” Schmidt said. “There will be armchair massages, and a couple of restaurants will be providing food.”

Schmidt believes that with diabetes and obesity becoming more prevalent in the United States, people need resources on how to prevent and counteract these illnesses.

“It’s not about the food, but you have to understand yourself and pay attention to why and not ignore the signs that are like waving flags in front of you,” he said.

He encourages everyone to come early to take advantage of every resource that will be available there.

“I want to help them to make life changes and live well,” he said.
