A Wisconsin man is accused of beheading his 68-year-old mother using a sword with a 4-foot blade.

Police say Matthew Skalitzky, 40, killed his mother, Jane Skalitzky, after she dropped him off at his townhouse in Sun Prairie, about 13 miles northeast of Madison, last Friday afternoon.

Matthew Skalitzky had spent the night at his parents’ home nearby and had breakfast with them that morning, according to a warrant.

Joseph Skalitzky, Matthew’s father, told officers his son seemed “anxious and agitated” at breakfast and, at around 11:30 a.m., said he wanted to return to the townhouse. Jane Skalitzky offered to drive him there and the two soon left together, according to the warrant.

At the townhouse, Matthew Skalitzky’s roommate told police he saw the two arrive and go upstairs. About 10 to 15 minutes later, the roommate said he heard “stomping noises” and quickly went upstairs. Halfway up, the roommate said he heard Jane Skalitzky scream, “No, no, no,” according to the warrant.

When the roommate got upstairs, he saw Matthew Skalitzky holding the sword and standing over his mother’s body on the floor. The roommate said Jane had been decapitated, with injuries to her hands as well, according to the warrant.

The roommate said he approached Matthew, who quietly gave up the sword and let his roommate lead him “like a child” down the stairs to a couch, where he was told to sit while the roommate went outside to call 911, the warrant states.

Skalitzky was taken into custody without incident, police said.

Joseph Skalitzky, in an interview with police, said his son had recently stopped taking his prescribed medications after reading “negative comments” about the drugs online but had resumed taking them two days before the killing.

Jane Skalitzky retired after a 30-year career as a special education teacher in the Sun Prairie School District and was described by friends and colleagues as a “tireless advocate” for her students and a caring friend.
