Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Welcome to RedEye’s “Song of the Day,” an ongoing feature where music reporter Josh Terry or another RedEye staff member highlights something they’re listening to. Some days the track will be new, and some days it will be old. No matter what, each offering is something you should check out. Check back every weekday for a new song and subscribe to the Spotify playlist below.

Over the years, I’ve probably made more friends because of a mutual love of Built To Spill than any other band (if we’re keeping tabs, the Replacements, PUP and the Lawrence Arms are close seconds). It’s almost as if the veteran, Idaho-based indie rockers attract a certain kind of fan: people I’d get along with solely because they’d spent nights air-guitaring to an album like 1999’s “Keep It Like a Secret.”

If I weren’t covering Riot Fest this weekend (and having an absolute blast), I would have met up with some buddies at Built To Spill’s Subterranean show on Sunday night. While I’ve seen the band perform in the last two years, I haven’t been at a show where songs from its 2015 album “Untethered Moon” were played—and that’s a shame.

If there was anything I wish I didn’t miss, it’d be hearing lead single “Living Zoo.” While the whole thing has all the winning ingredients of a Built To Spill song (i.e., a bubbling power pop chorus, a bunch of intricate, zipping instrumentation), what’s really special about it is its opening. As someone who listened to a bonkers amount of this band learning guitar in high school, there hasn’t been a chord progression from the group’s recent output that I’ve loved more than this one. Plus, when the tempo drastically speeds up before the whole thing explodes into indie rock jubilee, I still get goosebumps. Listen below.
