An 18-year-old Elgin man who police say threatened a violent attack at Barrington High School will remain in custody on $100,000 bond at least until a bond review hearing scheduled for Thursday afternoon, according to officials.
Former Barrington High School student Tyler Bosworth was charged last week with felony disorderly conduct after police said he posted a threat Sept. 6 on Snapchat, stating that he would commit an act of violence at the school, according to Barrington Police Chief Dave Dorn. He is being held at the Lake County Jail in Waukegan, Dorn said.
Bosworth appeared Tuesday in the Lake County Courthouse, and is due back at 1:30 p.m. Thursday for a bond review. Cynthia Vargas, a spokeswoman for the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office, said the message Bosworth posted stated that he planned to bring weapons to the high school on Wednesday.
Judge Christen Bishop asked Tuesday whether Bosworth had met with a social worker and was informed that he had.
Bosworth was arrested at his home on Oakdale Drive in Elgin after police were notified of the post, Dorn said. He said police security would be increased at the school on Wednesday, the day Bosworth claimed he would commit the violent act.
Vargas said one the messages Bosworth posted read: “No escape, we are in the school.”
Barrington High School’s principal, Steve McWilliams, wrote in an email to parents that the number one priority is student and staff safety, and “threats of this nature are taken extremely seriously.”
Bosworth was also charged July 31 with aggravated battery to a police officer, aggravated assault to a police officer and resisting a police officer in connection with an incident that occurred on the 400 block of West Russell Street in Barrington. Bosworth spit twice on Barrington officers, Dorn said, and the case is pending in a Rolling Meadows court.
