Gurnee

Fundraiser: Woodland School District 50’s Middle School Marching Wildcats band will join forces with the Warren Township High School Marching Blue Devils and the Viking Middle School band to perform their marching routine in exhibition style at 7 p.m. Sept. 16 at the high school, 500 N. O’Plaine Road, Gurnee. Admission is free. Students are asking for cash donations to literally “Fill the Drums” to help raise funds for the family of Taina Salas, a former Viking student who is now a freshman at Warren Township High School. Taina was diagnosed this spring with two brain tumors. She is currently at home resting in preparation for the surgery to remove the tumors. Her mother has had to take a leave of absence from work to provide constant care for Taina, resulting in an accumulation of medical expenses and household bills. Money donated will support the Salas Family as they manage Taina’s medical care. Details, 847-856-3670.

Lake Forest

Open house: The Lake Forest City Council has proclaimed Sept. 18, “Woodlands Academy of the Sacred Heart Day” in the city. That’s the day the all-girls college preparatory high school dedicates its new expanded campus on the former Barat College site. An open house will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Sept. 18 adjacent to Woodlands’ location at 760 E. Westleigh Road. It will allow the general public to see how Woodlands has transformed the 23-acre parcel into a variety of—– mostly open-space — uses. Expanded campus features include two new athletic fields, the Gloria Dei Center, Barat Cupola Garden and a community walking path. Its addition creates a reunited 41-acre site that’s just shy of the original 44-acre 1904 parcel. Details, 847- 234-4300.
