Events set on the Elgin Community College campus to celebrate Latino Heritage Month:

“Bless Me, Ultima” film screening and discussion, 12:30 to 2 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 16, Building C, Room C120. Based on the acclaimed novel by Rudolfo Anaya, “Bless Me, Ultima” is a drama set in New Mexico during World War II, centered on the relationship between a young man, an elderly medicine woman, and the battle between good and evil. Popcorn will be served.

Día de la Familia (“day of the family”), 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 19, Building C Library. ECC will offer workshops and sessions focused on preparation for, entering, and succeeding in college for those who hope to attend college within the next five years. Lunch is included.

Los Compadres of Comedy, 7 to 9 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 24, Building G Spartan Auditorium. An evening with rising comedy stars Pablo Rodriguez, Vince Acevedo, Joey Villagomez, Manny Acosta and Lucky Luciano. Presented by the Mikey O Comedy Show. General admission tickets are $5 and can be purchased at tickets.elgin.edu.

All Things Latino, noon to 1 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 29, Building B Jobe Lounge. A “Jeopardy!” game show-style contest in which teams of four compete based on their knowledge of Latino/Hispanic pop culture in movies, TV and music. Prizes will be awarded to the winning team, and mementos will be provided to each participant. Guidelines for forming a team will be available in the Office of Student Life.

25 Years of Latino History, 11 a.m. to noon, Monday, Oct. 5 Building B Hallway. Learn about the rich history of Latinos at Elgin Community College and beyond from presentations of historical research conducted by students enrolled in ECC’s “History of U.S. Latinos” course. Free snacks will be provided.

Wise Latina Brunch, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Friday, Oct. 9, Building E University and Business Center. The Wise Latina Brunch is a time to recognize and be inspired by women who have achieved the highest of goals. This year the event will recognize Nora V. Renteria, a community college graduate, who will share her journey across “Stepping Stones of Perseverance.” General admission tickets are $10 and can be purchased at tickets.elgin.edu.

DREAMERS: Achieving the American Dream, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 14 Building B Jobe Lounge. Join ECC college students and staff as they share the path of ECC’s undocumented students toward achieving a college degree and beyond. Free snacks will be provided.

The college is at 1700 Spartan Drive, between McLean Boulevard and Randall Road south of Route 20.
