Want to ride a Divvy bike for free?

You won’t have to pay $9.95 for a 24-hour pass on the next two Saturdays, Sept. 12 and 19.

T-Mobile is covering the cost for the promotion, which city officials hope will encourage cyclists to try the bike-sharing system and lead them to buy the $75 annual membership. Currently Divvy has more than 30,000 members.

Riders can go to any of the 475 Divvy stations around Chicago and select “Get a Ride” on the screen. They’ll still have to swipe their credit or debit card but it won’t charge them unless they go over the 30-minute time limit per trip.

Users can take multiple rides within a 24-hour period by selecting “Requesting a New Ride Code” at the kiosks.

The promotion began last Saturday and more than 5,600 people took advantage of the free ride, according to the Chicago Department of Transportation.

In addition, Divvy is offering an “End of Summer” promotion for annual memberships. New members who sign up in September will receive one extra free month tacked on to the 12-month membership.

This summer, the city saw a record-hitting day on July 4 when 25,000 Divvy trips were made in a single day, said Sean Wiedel, assistant commissioner of Chicago’s Department of Transportation.

Since the program launched in June 2013, riders have logged 5.5 million trips and 11.6 million miles, he said.
