Police are looking for information on a Labor Day stabbing in North Hammond in which a man was killed.
A woman living at a residence in the 4400 block of Sheffield Avenue called Hammond Police at around 1:54 p.m. Monday to report that her roommate, Joseph Gonzales, 61, was found unresponsive in his bed, Hammond Police spokesman Lt. Rich Hoyda said Tuesday.
Officers determined that Gonzales appeared to have a stab wound in his chest.
The Lake County Coroner’s office pronounced Gonzales dead at 3 p.m. Monday, according to a release.
Hoyda said the woman said Gonzales was alive Sunday evening but could release no further details, adding that his death hasn’t been classified as a homicide at this time.
Hoyda said the number of homicides stands at five for the year. Charges have only been filed by detectives for a June 6 incident in the 4100 block of Calumet Avenue in which a Minnesota man allegedly killed his female companion in a hotel room.
