Three-year old Aylan Kurdi, photographed drowned off the coast of Turkey, has become a tragic symbol for the deepening migrant crisis in Syria and the surrounding countries (read more here). The boy’s family was attempting to reach Greece in a small, overloaded boat. The boat flipped, and Aylan, his 5-year-old brother and mother drowned.
The scope of the flight from Syria, and the humanitarian crisis within, is enormous and has plagued the country in the last four years as an uprising turned into a brutal civil war. The United Nations estimates that 11 million of Syria’s 22 million population have been killed, displaced or are in need of humanitarian help since the conflict began. More on the U.S. and refugees here.
Here, five charts attempt to put the crisis in context.
